Joseph N. Rubinstein (b. 1986) is a composer, singer, and advocate for new music. His works have been performed by groups including the Norfolk Contemporary Music Ensemble, The Columbia University Bach Society, WorldMuse, C4, the Young New Yorker’s Chorus, DETOUR New Music, and the International Vocal Arts Workshop in Croatia. He has studied composition at the Yale Summer School of Music at Norfolk, the Bowdoin International Music Festival, the University of Edinburgh, and Columbia University. He received his BA in Music from Columbia in 2008, where his primary teachers were Joseph Dubiel, Fred Lerdahl, and Sebastian Currier. Recent awards and recognition include the 2012 Brian Israel Prize from the Society for New Music, a commission from the 2011 Young New Yorkers’ Chorus Composer Competition, Second Place in the 2009 SACRA / PROFANA Composer Competition, Region II finalist status in the 2008 SCI / ASCAP Student Commission Competition, and a 2008 Ellen Battel Stoeckel Scholarship to the Yale Summer School of Music at Norfolk. Joe is also an active advocate for contemporary music, and as a performer and concert planner has been involved in many premieres of new works by a variety of living composers, both emerging and established. From the fall of 2008 through the summer of 2011, Joe worked full time on composer and new music promotion for a major music publisher in New York City, and sang tenor in C4 – the Choral Composer / Conductor Collective. He is currently a graduate student in music composition at The Juilliard School, where he studies with Robert Beaser. |
